The epm: academy was established in the summer of 2015 following our first year in our brand new, 60,000 sq. ft. premises.
At EPM Composites we are investing in the future and are wanting to give young adults the opportunity to develop their skills in a working environment and apply this to their studies at the same time.
epm: academy works in partnership with Derby College to deliver the Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in Engineering. This a two-year course where the students will spend the first year developing their academic abilities in engineering, and the second year on the course allows them to complete work experience placements at epm: technology group to add a detailed practical aspect to their learning. There are exposed to the challenges of real life projects as part of our team and epm: academy.
Future opportunities include employment at epm and advanced apprenticeships and higher apprenticeships for the best and most enthusiastic students.
Enrollment for the course is on a yearly basis and all applications are taken through the college. If you’d like to find out more about the course you can view this on the Derby College website»»

What past epm: academy students say
about the experience at epm: technology
Jasmin Evans – Academy Student 2015-2016, now full-time employee
I really enjoyed all the activities I did during the work experience. I found it very interesting seeing all the operations of epm and how the business ran overall. My favourite section was the office seeing the business development side while also seeing the CAD and CNC operations. I found it helped to clear gaps from the theory side of college and putting them into a real-life, practical business environment. This was especially on the CAD and CNC due to seeing the processes and creating links from college work.
Scott Mcleod – Academy Student 2015-2016
I enjoyed getting hands on and time went very quickly down in laminating and fitting. Making parts that were (possibly) going on an actual Formula 1 car was also exciting… that’s if they passed inspection!
I also enjoyed shadowing with Jack, one of the engineers and liked how we were in small groups or just by ourselves as I felt I got to learn more.
I have definitely learned a lot while at epm: technology. It has shown me what is like to be in a real workplace environment.
Overall I found every member of staff to be approachable, friendly and I felt comfortable asking questions. For example in laminating or fitting, if there were things I didn’t know how to do, or didn’t have the correct tools to do it, a member of staff would give me tips or allowed me to borrow their tools.
